The Daphne Whitmore Rose Bowl

 

In 2009 the Rose Bowl was awarded to SI Canterbury, whose project in providing bore holes has had a huge impact on the Lumine community in Zimbabwe. The area which benefits from these bore holes is the only one not to have been affected by recent cholera epidemics because of the supply of fresh water. Helen Madzokere, project leader, along with the rest of the team, are thrilled to know that their project has certainly saved lives.

2011 Winners

At the Regional AGM on Saturday 17th September, Federation President Liz Morgan-Lewis awarded the Rose Bowl to SI East Grinstead for their joint project with Rainbows, Brownies and Girl Guides to make Pillow Case Dresses. This project had an emphasis on service, partnership and an International theme.

2009 Winners

Clubs will be judged on one or more of the following criteria:


  1. •Working in collaboration with an overseas Club or other organisation outside the UK.

  2. •Undertaken a project to advance human rights in one or more of the following fields:

    1. ■Education

    2. ■Environment

    3. ■Health

    4. ■Economic and Social Development

  3. •The activities have made a difference to the life of a community, group or an individual.

The opinion of the panel of judges, which will be led by a prominent Soroptimist from outside the Region, will be final.

Award criteria

Daphne thoroughly enjoyed being a Soroptimist and gave valuable service, first to her club, SI Tunbridge Wells and District, and then as Divisional Union (now Region) President (1984/5) and DU Secretary (1986/91).

She was Chief Steward for the SIGBI Federation Conference held in Eastbourne, and attended many other Federation Conferences. She deeply valued the international aspect of Soroptimism, and was keen to foster links with clubs in other countries of the world. One of Daphne's proudest moments was when South East Region conferred on her Honorary Membership of Region in 1999.

Now this Rose Bowl in her memory is awarded annually to the club within this region which, in the opinion of the judges, has done the most to fulfil the SI aim of promoting International Goodwill and Understanding.

In honour of the outstanding work that Daphne Whitmore MBE, a former regional honorary member, carried out at Region, a cut glass Rose Bowl will be awarded on an annual basis to the Club that has done the most to fulfil the SI aim of promoting International Goodwill and Understanding.
