Education

Education made us what we are.

(Helvetius 1715-1771)

Everyone has the right to education.

Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. "

(from Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)

Education touches on many aspects of human life. A number of 'education' projects are undertaken both at regional and club level.

A Regional Project:

The report on children's food, drink and alcohol consumption.

Fat, Flabby and Flat-out

The South East Region published a report in June 2004 based on a survey of children's eating habits.

Several clubs in the region assisted with the initial survey asking children aged 9-15 years about their diet and preferred food.

Among the recommendations based on our findings is a range of measures to educate young people and their parents about the need for a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Providing opportunities for children in the Region:

Job Seeking and Interview Techniques

SI of East Grinstead helps school leavers who are not going on to further education with their job seeking and interviews. A booklet gives advice on how to prepare a CV, write a letter of application and prepare for an interview. Students then have to fill in their CVs and apply for a 'job'. This continues as a competition: finalists are invited for an interview and an overall winner is chosen.

All candidates are given reviews of their performances, pointing out any mistakes they may have made.

Extra Curricular Activities for a local Girl's Secondary School

S I of Sevenoaks, working with the residents of a local sheltered housing complex, sponsors extra curricular activities at a local girls school. This has included hockey and art summer school attendance and the repair and maintenance of instruments for the school wind band.

Many children in poorer countries do not have access to even a basic primary education. Several clubs in the region sponsor the provision of such education in Africa, India and Asia.

SI of Lewes and District works with Reach, a small registered charity in a village near Lahore, Pakistan to provide basic education for girls aged six to twelve. The funds raised by the club have enabled the work to continue and expand by the purchase of a building, an increase in the number of pupils and the extension of the teaching of basic literacy and hygiene to women in the afternoons. Reach is an organisation run by women personally known to a club member.

These are but a few of the projects undertaken by clubs who often work with their Friendship link clubs or personal contacts.
