New Lewes member, Natalie Armitage, is a postgraduate student studying for a masters degree in Human Rights. Natalie is shortly going to the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town.Natalie was inducted as a Soroptimist by Regional Councillor Hilary Rowberry at the club meeting on 20th March which featured a presentation on HEALTHWATCH

SI Lewes Wooden Horse Racing Evening - 15th February 2014

This event at the Beechwood Hall, Cooksbridge proved to be an enjoyable fun evening, which raised £435 for the NSPCC and Charities chosen by the Mayor of Lewes, club member, Ruth O’Keeffe.

Child Trafficking

On Thursday 16th January 2014 Mandy John-Baptiste, Head of NSPCC Child Trafficking, spoke to the club and a large number of guests. After the presentation the meeting adjourned to the Rainbow for refreshment and further discussion. The Child Trafficking Advice Centre, a UK service offers advice and raises awareness to all professionals who have a concern for a child being trafficked. Recently training has been delivered to immigration staff in Nigeria and Ghana in order to prevent children being trafficked.

Christmas Festivity 2014

On December 18th 2014, we held a Christmas social event at Anja’s home in Barcombe. A raffle raised £45 for the International President’s Appeal, See Solar Cook Solar

The White Ribbon Campaign

At the club meeting on 17th October 2013, Jason Tingley, Chief Inspector of Police & Sarah Findlay, Head of Housing Strategy & Homelessness presented The White Ribbon Campaign. White Ribbon UK is a national organisation founded in 2004 working to involve men in opposing violence and abuse against women with particular focus on the 25th November. This is recognised by the UN as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The meeting was opened by Soroptimist and Mayor of Lewes, Ruth O’Keeffe and facilitated by another Lewes member, County Councillor Rosalyn St Pierre. About 40 people attended including several Soroptimisters and Soroptimists from Eastbourne and East Grinstead. After the presentation, refreshments and questions, Regional Councillor Hilary Rowberry inducted Nicola Davies as a new member of SI Lewes and District. Around 20 people then adjourned to the Rainbow Inn.

Barbecue in Barcombe 2013

On Sunday 25th August 2013 SI Lewes and District held a Family-Friendly BBQ at Anja and Robin’s home which is a conversion of the old Barcombe Station. The heavy rain of Saturday was replaced by a warm sunny day. About 30 people, including four from SI Eastbourne, enjoyed the sunshine, food, Pimms and Fairtrade wines.

Bluebell Sunday

On 28th April 2013 SI Lewes & District held a Bluebell Sunday Event in Piltdown. Because of the late spring, there were not many bluebells but visitors were able to enjoy late daffodils, wood anemones, wild garlic, camellias, and fritillaries.
A substantial cream tea was provided and visitors enjoyed talking to four students from the Pestalozzi International Village.
