Bluebell Sunday 2016
In gloriously warm and sunny weather Soroptimists and friends enjoyed a substantial cream tea and the bluebell woods in Piltdown. This event raised over £400 for the Pestalozzi International Village and Girls Education in Nepal.
New President - New Venue
On 9th May SI Lewes held the first meeting of Vera Gajic’s Presidential Year in the historic Sherriffs Room of the White Hart Hotel. Our President's daughter Ella previewed her Brighton Fringe performance to an appreciative audience.
Women's Health and Nutrition
At the June meeting at "The White Hart" club secretary, Dian Shepperson, spoke about the links between women's health and nutrition. The meeting was also addressed by Regional Councillor Hilary Rowbery and Regional President Susie Forbes.
Women of Palestine
Speakers from PSC, Save The Children and PCRF talked about the experiences of women in Palestine, their suffering and resilience. A Palestinian craft stall was available and there was Palestinian food for refreshment.
Our annual BBQ at Barcombe on Sunday 21st August attracted visitors from East Grinstead, Brighton and Croydon Clubs as well as club members and friends.
We had a stand in the Town Hall at Lewes Societies Fair on Saturday 3rd September. A number people were interested in coming to our next meeting on Refugees which proved to bs both enlightening and interesting.
Jean talked to us about Lewes Group in Support of Refugees and Asylum Seekers (LGSRAS), which raises awareness and supports people and also lobbies local councils and the government to do more for refugees and asylum seekers.
We also heard from Maddie who spent a week at the Calais Jungle volunteering and told us about the day to day living conditions and the need for clean clothing, food and items that are culturally appropriate.
We then had a good discussion about how we in Lewes & District could help and support and we will continue this at a future meeting.
Nepal - passing on the gift of education.
On 9th January Nepalese Pestalozzi students talked about their homes and schools and Anne Hudson talked about the rebuilding of Bloom Nepal School after the earthquake.

Our meeting on February 13th was on Restorative Justice: the new way forward. Speakers were club member Amanda Hamblin DL and David Merrington representing Victim Support.
International Womens Day Breakfast
On Sunday 5th March, Lewes Soroptimists hosted an International Women's Day Breakfast at the White Hart Hotel. Liz Batten, a former SIGBI Federation President, gave a talk about the UN and what voice we have there. Each table of 6 held lively discussions about this year's theme Be Bold for Change and last year's Pledge for Parity and many issues in between. The 47 guests included Lewes Mayor Dr Graham Mayhew and Regional President Carol Infanti plus Soroptimists from Croydon, East Grinstead, Beckenham and Lewes, guests from other organisations and friends. A great way to keep the message alive and enjoy a tasty breakfast provided by The White Hart.
On 10th April, President Vera Galjic passed on the Presidential Chain of Office to new President Sue Walton. Sue is Chief Executive of the Pestalozzi International Village Trust based in Sedlescombe, East Sussex.
